PRIMES Workshop on the Use of Statistical Techniques in Water Quality Assessments.Hosted by Justin Williams and Dr. LeRoy Poff April 2006 (These dates are tentative.) Overview: Friday April 14 Introduction (1 hour) - An overview presentation on the biology of stream insects, and how they are used as water quality indicators. Dr. LeRoy Poff will discuss the scientific philosophy of measuring biological water quality, and the rationale for the kinds of quantitative techniques used to predict responses of aquatic insect communities. Monday April 16 Management Needs and Statistical Methods (1 hour) - An invited scientist/manager (TBA) will provide a management perspective and how biological monitoring and modeling are needed to protect water quality. We will also hear a background on relevant statistical methods and how they are useful for stream ecologists. Thursday April 20 Discussion and Lab (2 hours) - Justin William and Dr. LeRoy Poff will lead a discussion of a quantitative stream ecology paper and demonstrate the statistical methods used in computer lab setting. Saturday April 22 Field trip (~4 hours) – Justin William and Dr. LeRoy Poff will lead a field trip along the Poudre River. The group will be measuring water quality (including biological, physical, and chemical components) using simplified EPA rapid bio-assessment protocols. For more information please contact Justin B. Williams, Colorado State University Dept. of Biology 970-491-2414.
