PRogram for Interdisciplinary Mathematics, Ecology, and Statistics

PRIMES (PRogram for Interdisciplinary Mathematics, Ecology, and Statistics) is designed to address the challenges of studying complex ecological systems. Modern studies of ecological systems incorporate an extremely wide range of scientific and quantitative techniques, from the collection of data in the field, to the modeling of complex systems, to the application of advanced computational techniques. Consequently, quantitative ecology has become an inherently multi-disciplinary activity. Read More

Who is eligible for PRIMES Fellowship support?
United States citizens and permanent residents enrolled full time in a department or a Ph.D. granting program at CSU are eligible to receive PRIMES Fellowship support. PRIMES Fellowship support is awarded both to incoming students new to CSU and students already at CSU that are continuing involvement with PRIMES or aspiring to become involved with PRIMES. TOP

What is the duration of a stipend?
Stipends are awarded in units of semesters. Support may be given for an academic semester or the summer, or as a "half time" Fellowship of one academic semester and one summer, or a "full" Fellowship for one year. An incoming PRIMES student that is new to CSU typically receives a full stipend for their first year and half time support for a second year taken when the student is ready. Students already at CSU are awarded PRIMES Fellowship support for one or more semesters and/or summers. TOP

How do I apply for a PRIMES Fellowship?
If you are not currently a student in a department or Ph.D. granting program at CSU, the first step is to be accepted into such a program. During the application process, you should simultaneously apply for a PRIMES Fellowship. If you are already a graduate student in a department or Ph.D. granting program at CSU, then the first step is to find two faculty sponsors from different disciplines with interests in quantitative ecology for your application. You can find the application material for PRIMES Fellowship support here. Departments, units, and Ph.D. granting programs with connections to PRIMES are listed here. Faculty and scientists with connections to PRIMES are listed here. TOP

What is the commitment on the part of the student receiving a PRIMES Fellowship support?
Depending on the stage of their studies, the intended commitment by any student receiving any form of PRIMES support consists of (a) taking the relevant gateway/reciprocal courses , (b) enrolling in the TREE course for one or more semesters, (c) attending relevant PRIMES seminars, research group meetings, workshops, and conferences, and (d) conducting research in quantitative ecology. TOP

What is the commitment on the part of the faculty sponsors of a student receiving PRIMES Fellowship support?
Faculty sponsors must contribute directly to the activities of PRIMES such as organizing a conference, workshop, or seminar series in quantitative ecology, mentoring a TREE course, or teaching an AQME module or a gateway reciprocal course. TOP

Can a student get a PRIMES Fellowship for the entire time of their graduate studies?
No! PRIMES Fellowships are intended to augment the usual support mechanisms in the home departments, units, and degree granting programs of PRIMES students, not replace those mechanisms. PRIMES Fellowship support is not generally given for more than two years. Students receiving PRIMES support must have a commitment for the usual form of financial support from their home department, degree granting program or industrial internship for the balance of their graduate studies, subject to the standard rules and requirements. TOP

Can a student be supported solely by a partial PRIMES Fellowship?
No! A PRIMES student receiving Fellowship support in a given year must be supported for the entire year. So students receiving a partial stipend must be supported at the usual level by their home department, degree granting program, or industrial internship for the balance of the year.
